Common Problems a
Reptile Can Experience

As reptile vet experts, we’re very familiar with problems and conditions your reptile may experience throughout their life. Some are more common than others, and some are easily preventable and rectified with advice and knowledge.

Temp

Reptiles are cold-blooded. If their environment isn’t optimised, they can be susceptible to pneumonia or respiratory disease.

Apple

If a reptile’s diet isn’t nutritionally sound, they can develop conditions like metabolic bone disease.

Heart

If a reptile is having difficulty shedding their skin (dysecdysis), this can be a common sign of many health issues.

Eggs

Reproductive problems are common in reptiles and can be very serious. If your reptile has stopped eating, is digging, their belly is swollen or their legs are splayed, you should talk to a veterinary professional.

Moon

Hibernation is a physiological behaviour in some reptiles. However, it is not always normal. If yours does hibernate, it is essential you help them do it properly. We can advise you on how.

Doc

If a reptile is stressed or unwell, the frequency of their tongue-flicking may increase. They may also dig, scratch or bang their heads.

A Reptile’s Diet

Your reptile’s optimal diet will depend on their species, size and age. Across the reptile family, diets vary from carnivore, herbivore, insectivore and omnivore. For example, a Land Tortoise is a vegetarian, whereas Leopard Geckos solely eat meat. These are general guidelines, but every reptile is different. Our team can advise on your pet’s specific needs including diet and supplements.

Scales

Reptiles typically eat 1-4% of their bodyweight per day

Reptile Vet Expert Help & Advice

We’re the UK’s only online veterinary service exclusive to exotic pets, including reptiles. No matter where you are, we can offer you expert support over telephone or video call.

Many exotic pets, including reptiles, need a carefully controlled environment including regulated humidity and temperature. In nearly all cases, reptiles need access to specialised heating and lighting to prevent them from becoming ill. We can advise you on your reptile’s specific environmental needs.
Reptiles are cold-blooded. In the wild, they can often be observed basking in the sunshine to build up their body heat. If your reptile is basking for long periods of time and being very still, this is often nothing to worry about. However, if you have a concern about a change in their activity, we can help!
Head bobbing is a typical behaviour seen in reptiles. It is considered a mating ritual behaviour, but can also display defence or affection. If you’re concerned about your reptile’s behaviour, our expert team can help you.
Many reptiles shed their skin in pieces, including tortoises, lizards and chameleons. Others, like snakes, typically shed their skin in one piece. If your reptile is having problems shedding their skin, or if their old skin is getting stuck on their eyes and fingers, we can advise you on what to do.
